Once again it’s time for Barry from Ozark Natural Foods Farm and Garden Department.  This time I’m going to talk about humified compost. What it is and why it helps create healthy soil for your organic garden.  We carry bagged humified compost called Boost-it Soil Life Enhancement.  Boost-it describes humified compost as the life force in the soil. The humification of compost occurs when a very specific methodology is used during the biological composting process. It balances heat, moisture, oxygen, nutrients and carbon. Balanced, stable humus is considered to be important to the fertility of soils in a physical, chemical and biological sense. Physically, it helps the soil retain moisture, and encourages the formation of good soil structure. Chemically, it has many active sites which bind to ions of plant nutrients, making them more available. Biologically, humus feeds the soil population of micro-organisms and other creatures, thus maintaining high and healthy levels of micro-organisms or micro life.
